March 1, 2010 | Heaven On Earth
By this time I was starting to feel at home at Sam’s house. It hadn’t been my intention to stay with him quite so long. I guess the mirroring effect we had on one another made it very comfortable for us to be around each other for long periods of time. All I knew was that he made me laugh and I could be myself, and we both were having fun.
I liked Sam’s home. It was very comfortable and stylish, and one of those homes that felt entirely lived-in. At 48 years old, I still had never owned a home. I never wanted to be tied down to a mortgage, or one particular place. I had always been a wanderer.
Sam and I spent the early part of the day running errands and visiting some of his friends. We returned to his place that afternoon and started cleaning the front yard. We spent several hours weeding, moving stones, cutting branches and sweeping the sidewalk and driveway. I had always, always loved working in the yard, so to do this with Sam was pure joy. It also gave me the opportunity to “pay my rent” so to speak. We planned to start in the backyard later in the week if I was still around.
That evening, after dinner, we retired to his saltwater hot tub for a long, quiet soak. As we were sitting there relaxing and taking in the night air, the moon once again came up over the horizon and lit up the backyard. It did feel like heaven on earth.
Since Sam was going snow skiing with his tenant early the next morning, I made plans to visit Joshua Tree National Park. I didn’t know how to ski, and I had always wanted to visit Joshua Tree. We both called it a night and went to bed early.
